South Africa Labor Day 2024

Upcoming Holiday Celebrates Workers' Rights and Trade Unions

Mark Your Calendar for Monday, September 2nd

South Africa's Labor Day, also known as International Workers Day or May Day, is a public holiday observed on Monday, September 2nd, 2024. This holiday recognizes the contributions of workers and the importance of trade unions in protecting their rights.

Workers Day has its roots in the labor movement of the late 19th century. On May 1, 1886, workers in Chicago went on strike to demand an eight-hour workday. The strike turned violent, and several workers were killed. In memory of those workers, May 1st was declared International Workers Day in 1889.

In South Africa, Labor Day was first celebrated in 1910. It became a public holiday in 1925, and today it is a day for workers to take a break from work and celebrate their achievements. Many people also use this holiday to reflect on the history of the labor movement and the ongoing struggle for workers' rights.
