Cicadas Set to Invade Parts of the US

Billions of Noisy Insects Expected to Emerge

What to Do When Cicadas Are Present

More than 3,000 species of cicadas are found all around the globe, but just nine are periodical and of these, only three are found in the US. The emergence of trillions of cicadas is underway in parts of the US, and experts are advising residents to be prepared for the noisy invasion. The cicadas that are currently emerging belong to Brood X, a group of 17-year periodical cicadas that last emerged in 2004. Brood X is the largest of the periodical cicada broods and is expected to produce trillions of cicadas over the next few weeks. Cicadas are large, flying insects that are known for their distinctive singing. The males of the species produce a loud, high-pitched noise to attract mates. The noise can be deafening at times, but it is generally harmless. Cicadas do not bite or sting, and they do not pose a threat to humans or animals. However, they can be a nuisance, and their sheer numbers can be overwhelming. If you live in an area that is expected to be affected by Brood X, there are a few things you can do to prepare: - Stay indoors as much as possible during the day, when the cicadas are most active. - If you must go outside, wear earplugs or headphones to protect your hearing. - Keep your windows and doors closed to prevent the cicadas from getting inside your home. - If you have a pool, cover it to prevent the cicadas from drowning. - Be careful when driving, as cicadas can be slippery and can cause accidents. The cicadas will eventually die off after a few weeks, but their eggs will remain in the ground for another 17 years. The next emergence of Brood X is expected to occur in 2041.
